Dining Room
When it came to finding stuff, Sarah knew just where to shop: her store, Chateau Sonoma, which specializes in French country antiques. That's where the dining room cabinet, a 19th-century pine piece with cut-leaf designs, used to dwell, albeit with an astronomical price tag attached. "I secretly didn't want anyone to buy it!" Sarah confesses.
In this photo: Sarah's favorite possession, an 18th-century wooden angel, looks over the dining room. She nabbed the piece in France, where she also bought the antique pine trestle table, oak bistro chairs, and wood-and-iron chandelier.
Little Vignettes
Among the collections displayed in the dining room: transferware, alder-wood baguette boards, and rattan wine baskets. Sarah is also an avid collector of of all things avian—taxidermied birds, nests, and cages.
Living Room
With such an eccentric mix of decor, Sarah felt bold color would be a bad idea. "If I had put up chintz wallpaper, you wouldn't notice the architectural shape of a birdcage or the patina of a wooden milking stool," she explains. "White reveals nuances." It can also be surprisingly warm. Instead of basic white paint, Sarah had an artisan spray the walls with a watered-down blend of several creamy hues before troweling the plaster—yielding a rich effect with tinges of gray and putty and yellow that's different in every room.
