After: Exterior
Now, a brick driveway welcomes guests. Rini dug up the patchy lawn and supplanted it with a tidy gravel courtyard that leads to a carport. A few coats of Nightfall by Benjamin Moore—on the front door and its side transoms—took the entry from wan to wow.
Before: Backyard
Built in the classic single-story, "dogtrot" style first popular in the early 19th century, the house originally featured a center hallway open to the outdoors on both ends, and with a large room on each side. But at some point, the back porch had been enclosed, creating two more rooms—and an undesirable side effect. "It felt like a dead end," Cuppett recalls.
After: Backyard
While he had no intention of giving up the extra space the graceless annex granted, Cuppett did reestablish the flow between indoors and out by enlarging the rear windows and putting in new ones. He and Rini also added a deck that connects to the yard via wide stairs and tore down the rickety gazebo and fence, making way for a lush border of cherry laurels.
In this photo: French cafe doors flank a 1920s washtub planted with herbs; to the right, an espaliered magnolia functions as a living wall. The lawn was regraded and resodded, and the exterior walls painted Half-Moon Crest by Benjamin Moore.
The Architect
Tim Cuppett and Bosco relax in the living room, next to double-hung shutters that were crafted from reclaimed pine. "It's a privilege to wake up in this house that existed before us, and will exist after us," he says.
