In October, this home springs to life, with cutout bats taking flight across walls and alighting on table settings.
Bats at the Door
A flock of bat cutouts swarm the front door of Suzanna Frosch and Blake Tovin's home in New York's lower Hudson Valley.
Crafting these creepy bats involves little more than using a pair of scissors. For details, see Halloween Templates.
Yellow Dining Room
The dining room's turned-leg table once stood in a Maine grange hall, while the vintage library cabinet came out of a Connecticut municipal building. Frosch and Tovin snatched up the plywood Thonet chairs — plus one industrial office seat — from various dealers at a Connecticut antiques fair for $25 to $40 each.
Chair
Licensed Thonet reproductions cost around $400; Design Within Reach's version delivers similar style at a fraction of the price. ($125; dwr.com)
Pendant Lamp
Instead of shining a single light, this brushed-nickel fixture casts enough glow to illuminate an entire dining table. ($455; schoolhouseelectric.com)
